Of policy no one had galvanic refrigerators in the 1940's, at least not in our neighborhood. So we were solely dependent on the "Ralph Kramden" ice box. This tool was unique and useful. A two compartment unit made out of wood. And, it was lined with steel painted white. The top compartment was ordinarily smaller and that held the food that needed refrigeration. The lowest section was larger and held the block of ice.

The top didn't have any shelves as I remember so food was kind of stuffed in as best you could. The lowest could if needed be used to keep things cold as well as keep the ice. No Freezer Section. If you wanted ice for drinks you just grabbed the ice pick and chipped off some ice for your drink. Or, take a large chunk wrap it in a towel and beat it with a hammer on the kitchen table. When my parents finally upgraded to a dissimilar home my Mom one day set out a pitcher of water with ice cubes in it. No holiday, no special occasion. I idea we were rich.

The whole carrying out depended on keeping a regular contribute of ice in the ice box. The ice company provided a sign that could be hung in the front window of your house. It had four side with four dissimilar sizes of ice on each side. Our job as kids after we were told was to hang the ice sign in the window and to make sure the size needed was at the bottom. The ice man would come along in his delivery truck on some designated schedule. He would read the sign in the window. Cut a block of ice that matched the signs requirement. He had a leather sling and shoulder pad that he used to carry the cube up on his shoulder with.Our guy was lucky. We lived in a house and the ice box was in the kitchen on the first floor. Sometimes the Ice Man had to carry the block of ice up flights of stairs to citizen who lived in apartments. His tools were ice tongs and ice pick. And of policy a strong back. Just think about this mans job. All day long up into the truck, cut a chunk of ice. Dismount load the block on your back and carry it to the Ice Box. And, ice tongs and ice picks, us kids were impressed.

You got self-acting delivery if the sign was in the window. The ice man just opened the front door with the cube of ice on his shoulder and hollered out "Ice Man". In he came found the ice box and put the new block of ice into it. Didn't matter what was going on in the family. He just let himself in the house. And, if I remember right he got paid cash on the spot.

Along his route as he was delivering he would sound the call "Ice Man", for those who needed ice but forgot to put up the sign. Or, the kids who forgot to do what their parents told them. If no one was colse to to corral him then you got no ice. And, problem was afoot. For you.

Now there were times when thing just didn't work out. We would run out of ice and the Ice Man wasn't due to deliver for some time. Here's where the advantages of having a child came in. Mom would say, "Get the wagon and go get some ice.". I don't know where the wagon ever came from but one became available. It was our job to go over to the Ice House and bring home a block of ice. For me that was a 10 block round trip. And, sometimes Mom would let you pick up a block of ice for a neighbor too.

Wagon in tow off you would go to get the ice. 8th and Dupont road on the corner over from Dela Donnes Store was the Ice House. It was a 8' X 10' wooden shed. Lined with steel and full of ice. It was a sub station for solitaire Ice And Coal. You just asked the attendant for two 15cent blocks of ice and he hacked them off for you and with his tongs loaded them on your wagon.

Now this Ice Man was too scary for us kids. He was an aged black man. Finding back probably not paid very much in a labor arduous job. He was bent over and had a contorted body and face. I don't remember whether he was kindly or not. I just wanted to get my ice and get out of there. When no one was buying ice he had a stool in front of the ice house he would sit on. To me he just looked menacing with those tongs and ice pick.

The trip home with ice in the summer time was a fun trip. ordinarily there was some change. And, I would take the turn and put it on top of the ice and let it melt down into the block of ice. By the time I got home it could be several inches down into the ice. A excellent vertical column. How we got the ice cube into the house I don't remember. We probably had a set of ice tongs at home to carry the block of ice in with.

I never relished these jobs our parents put on us. But liking wasn't an selection for our generation. We were the cheap labor and yet most of us grew up without going to jail. And we got an education that allowed us to reserve and raise our families. Chores were just like growing up - they just happened. The chores were there and we were unbelievable to help.

However, the one that earns my many respect and the one with whom I feel the many affinity is Shackleton because I have learned so much from his style of leadership - characteristics that I have endeavoured to consolidate within my own supervision style.

Sir Ernest Shackleton has been called "the many leader that ever came on God's earth bar none" for salvage the lives of twenty-seven men stranded with him on an Antarctic ice floe for approximately two years.

From 1914 to 1916 Shackleton and his men survived the wreck of their ship Endurance, in the crushing Antarctic ice, stranded twelve hundred miles from civilisation with no means of transportation and no hope of rescue. The temperatures were so low the men could hear the ice freeze. They subsisted on a diet of penguins, seals and finally dogs.

When the ice began to break up, Shackleton set out to save them all on a heroic eight-hundred mile trip across the frigid South Atlantic - in dinky more than a rowboat.

Unlike most of the polar expeditions, every man survived - not only in good health, but also in good spirits - all due to the leadership skills of Shackleton.

So What Are The Leadership Lessons We Can Learn?

Here are just a few that I have adopted;

- Cultivate a sense of compassion and accountability for others. As a leader you have a bigger impact on the lives of those under you than you can imagine.

- Once a work decision has been made, commit to stick it out straight through the tough studying period.

- Play your part in creating an upbeat environment: A inescapable and vibrant workplace is leading to productivity.

- Broaden your cultural and collective horizon beyond your normal experiences. studying to see life from different perspectives will give you greater flexibility when it comes to problem solving at work

- We live in a rapidly changing world so be willing to ventive in new directions to seize new opportunities and learn new skills

- Find ways in which to turn setbacks and failures to your advantage. This represents a good time to step transmit on your own

- Be bold in foresight and truthful in planning. Dare to try something new, but be truthful with your proposal so that your ideas have a good opportunity of succeeding

- Learn from your mistakes - yours and those made by others. Sometimes the best teachers are the worst bosses.

- Never insist on achieving a goal or objective at any cost. It must be achieved at a uncostly expense, without undue hardship on your staff

- Don't be drawn into collective disputes with rivals. Better to engage in respectful competition. Remember you may need their co-operation someday

That's what every person called Bonthe. The British and all their gleened out of Africa wealth, had been gone for decades by the time we arrived, but somehow, at Christmas, a bit of the old hey day returned: the sketchy electricity stayed on a limited longer, there was authentically food to eat and the incredible miracle of ice cold drinks with ice cold ice in icy cold bottles appeared on every corner. people got all happy even though the agony of crushing poverty still beat out its' relentless bell toll of death every day. By the time Christmas arrived, we had pretty much given up on our Canadian born natural cheerfulness.

In our first 4 months there, we had seen so much unthinkable cruelty, that we come to think that any expression of happiness or joy would be just rude and mean. But when it comes to attitude, the African people were just so far ahead of any of us poomwii (Sierra Leonian name for white folk), they authentically know how to push away sorrow & just get right into celebrating right away, when happiness returns, even knowing that the next devastating loss in just nearby the corner. In Bonthe, at Christmas time, the partying, the dancing, the feasting, the drumming all got ramped right up to over the top and African laughter ringing out anywhere that wailing & crying & screaming had been just the day before. One day, I authentically did ask one of our fellow teachers, who was Sierra Leonian, how every person in Bonthe could suddenly become so happy and so fiercely jubilant in the midst of all their terrific problems.

She said " Well, in Bonthe, sometimes you just have to pretend to be happy because if you wait for it to be actual, then there will be No chance for it at all." So, that made no sense at all, to our young highly educated minds, but it struck a note somewhere in our psyche, that we would all the time remember, though decades would pass before we understood those words. It will not be anyone I could construe to you either, but someday you'll be able to see it and your gratitude will explode like a whole settlement of African drummers. The partying was fantastic, drumming, amped up dance music and libations until dawn every night.

The drums just seemed to arrive more & more each day. every person started drumming on everything. Old wooden boxes, plastic tubs, each other, the ground, the calabash wine vessels, the shells & bones & tin waste cans all became tuned up, cranked up drums. No ego elitist drummers here in Bonthe. The soundscape produced by these events were right out of reality. How can the drum music, produced on a couple of hundred bits of flotsum & trash, sound so powerful? It is just In the heart and soul and hands and feet of the spectacular African people. They just authentically know how to 'bring it' like no other people on earth. They bring it to the drumming, bring it to the dancing, bring it to the sorrow and then Bring It To The Joy. On that African island, there was no conflict between joy and sorrow.

What a gift! To be able to feel joy, right at the same occasion as sorrow, means that sorrow can not ,and does not, preclude happiness. In a world so rife with misery and devastation, this way of looking at life could truly be the only way to go through it happily with your laugh, your love and your dance intact. Give it a try this Christmas as we all face what We consider hard times. Remember: Sometimes you just have to pretend to be happy and then see what happens next. Here's to every person who still can conduct a smile to uplift their friends, house and neighbors this holiday season. Peace on earth. Good will to all. every person Drum now.
